What is an American Corgi?

The American Corgi is a developing “breed” based off of public demand. They were created by crossing a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and a Cardigan Welsh Corgi. FULL CORGI. They are recognized by the Continental Kennel Club. They are also recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club which call them Welsh Cardigan Corgis, and they are recognize by the International Designer Canine Registry which call them Pemcardigan Corgis.

They are not the same as Cowboy Corgis, as Cowboy Corgis are a cross between a Pembroke Welsh Corgi and an Australian Cattle Dog.

The American Kennel Club does not recognize American Corgis at this time due to them actually being a cross breed. People today want “designer” dogs. That is exactly what an American Corgi is. They want the body style of the Pembroke with the fun-loving personality of the Cardigan. American Corgis are a better choice for a first time Corgi owner due to their disposition. They have been described on another website as “an improved version of a Pembroke.”

This breed does not come without a shortage of opinions on both side of the argument as to whether American Corgis should be a breed at all. There is a lot of misinformation out there, and it is not hard to find. I can tell you to NOT buy from breeders advertising American Corgis as Merle Pembrokes, as there is no such thing.

If you want a more traditional looking Corgi, then my suggestion is to buy a solid colored American Corgi. They fit the bill nicely. Their temperaments are way less intense than a regular Pembroke.

I have never quite understood the uproar in the Corgi community about this upcoming breed. Other breeds have been crossing for years and now produce some of the most expensive puppies on the market. A few examples are: Chiweenie: Chihuahua, Dachshund Labradoodle: Labrador Retriever, Poodle Goldendoodle: Golden Retriever, Poodle Cockapoo: Cocker Spaniel, Poodle Dorgi: Corgi, Dachshund.  These are just to name a VERY few.

Our puppies, in particular, are for the people out there who want a traditional body stature of a Pembroke with that beautiful merle color of a Cardigan. We breed ethically and safely, and there is no unhealthy cross-breeding on our farm.

Even the Queen of England had over 30 dogs in her lifetime, and most of them were UNREGISTERED Corgis and Dorgis, a mixed breed. If this is good enough for the Queen, it's good enough for me!
